One of the most frequently asked questions we've been getting is: 'When on earth are we going to see the first bottle?' Whilst our limited edition Single Farm Origin whiskies won't be available to the trade throughout Europe until early May, we've considered how to go about releasing the very first bottle, and the mechanisms involved in that – and decided the best way was to throw a party. So we'll be opening the gates of Waterford Distillery to the public on Saturday April 25th. That party will be the only place that the First Cuvée will be available to purchase – you'll have to make a pilgrimage to the distillery.

Προσωπικά είμαι πραγματικά χαρούμενος που ένας φίλος της HMWS, του whiskyforum αλλά και προσωπικός, φτάνει επιτέλους στη δική του Ιθάκη, έτσι ακριβώς όπως την φαντάστηκε και δεν πρόλαβε να υλοποιήσει (ολοκληρώσει) στο Laddie.

Για όσους τυχερούς βρεθούν εκεί, 1500 αριθμημένα μπουκάλια, από τα οποία 1000 με την ένδειξη "I was there" θα περιμένουν για παραλαβή. Παράλληλα με το μπουκάλι ένα εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον masterclass.

Δύο μήνες έμειναν, και νομίζω ότι θα ήταν καλό (κυρίως για τα νέα μέλη) να δούνε τι έλεγε ο Mark όταν ξεκίναγε το 2015 με μία επένδυση περίπου 45m eur 

αλλά και τι λέει και αν υπάρχουν διαφορές (υπάρχουν αρκετά ενδιαφέροντα στοιχεία και απόψεις για το Irish whiskey) στην πιο πρόσφατη συνέντευξή του.

....όταν κάποτε έγραφε και έλεγε ένας γεροξεκούτης αντμινιστράτορας ότι κάποιοι πάνε να αλλάξουν λιγάκι την αγορά, να standardοποιήσουν την διαδικασία απόσταξης και να προσθέσουν το κομμάτι του terroir στο πριν την απόσταξη μέρος της διαδικασίας παραγωγής σαν το κύριο στοιχείο... τον λέγατε περίεργο.

Για να δούμε τώρα πως θα αντιδράσει η αγορά σε αυτό που λέει η ετικέτα και στα πρώτα tasting notes που λένε για διαφορετικό αποτέλεσμα με βάση το από που προέρχεται το κριθαράκι...  Single Farm Origin λέει η ετικετούλα και φυσικά, h επένδυση στο Waterford και η ικανότητα και οι υποδομές να κάνει single farm distillation, του δίνουν την άνεση να το γράφει στην ετικέτα του και να υποστηρίζει (και με τις αναλύσεις από το χημείο του Waterford) ότι υπάρχει τελικά terroir. 

"The barley plucked from Bannow Island, along the southeastern coast of the country, demonstrates a slight salinity from its maritime provenance. The Ballykilcavan, culled from the Emerald Isle’s lush interior showcases an earthy, farmhouse familiarity"

As stated by Reynier consumers have been “hoodwinked” regarding the origins of whiskey’s true quality. To him it is not so much the shape of the stills, nor the mineral content of the water, nor even the provenance of the cooperage. It’s all about that original building block, the barley itself. Indeed, few other distilleries are investing as heavily into this component as Waterford. Now the world will see if the end result was worth it.
