Concha y Toro eyes Japanese whisky barrels for Fetzer 1000 Stories - TFWA Asia-Pacific

Concha y Toro launched the Bourbon-barrel-aged 1000 Stories in the US in 2014

Concha y Toro launched the Bourbon-barrel-aged 1000 Stories in the US in 2014

Concha y Toro is exploring using Japanese whisky in its successful barrel-aged Fetzer range as supplies of Bourbon casks tighten.

The Chilean company's regional director for Asia-Pacific, Guy Nussey, said he has been looking into buying Japanese casks for the 1000 Stories brand to ensure supply keeps up with demand. The move follows 1000 Stories - a Californian Zinfandel aged in Bourbon barrels  - reaching 150,000 cases in volumes last year. Four years ago, 1000 Stories was selling just 10,000 cases.

Nussey told just-drinks it "is getting tough" to source enough Bourbon barrels for 1000 Stories as demand soars. The brand was initially launched in Kentucky in 2014 and according to Nussey was one of the first to uses whisk(e)y barrel ageing, alongside Pernod Ricard's Jacob's Creek Double Barrel.

Concha y Toro has greatly expanded distribution for 1000 Stories since its launch and the brand, which is still produced in 5,000-case batches, is now available in a number of non-US markets including Denmark and Switzerland. In May last year, Concha y Toro launched a red blend variant that uses Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, Petite Sirah and Merlot, and a few months later rolled 1000 Stories out in Travel Retail.

Meanwhile, Concha y Toro continues to focus on the Chinese market with its red wines. The company launched a Tmall store for its Casillero del Diablo brand last year, helping to boost volumes in the country from 180,000 cases in 2017 to a quarter of a million in 2018. Nussey said China this year will becomes the Don Melchor brand's biggest market, overtaking Chile.

This month Concha y Toro unveiled a Travel Retail-exclusive range for Casillero del Diablo called Route of Cabernet Sauvignon.

Concha y Toro mimics spirits with GTR wine range age statements - TFWA Asia-Pacific

16 May 2019 By: Andy Morton

The number of months Concha y Toro's wine has been aged for is displayed on the bottle's front label

Concha y Toro has taken cues from premium spirits for its new Casillero del Diablo Travel Retail wine range, which features ascending age statements.

The Casillero del Diablo Route of Cabernet Sauvignon range comprises three different expressions, each aged for a different length of time in oak barrels. The lowest-priced variant is aged for ten months, the middle variant for 12 months and the top-tier variant for 16 months.

The number of months is displayed on the bottle's front label, similar to year-based age statements used on spirits such as aged rum and single malt Scotch whisky.

Speaking to just-drinks at the TFWA Asia-Pacific exhibition in Singapore yesterday, Concha y Toro said the company used the three-tier spirits ranges found in global Travel Retail as an inspiration for the new wines. Concha y Toro's regional director for Asia-Pacific, Guy Nussey, said consumers can use the age statements as a purchasing guide, while the ladder-style structure leads them through the range.

"We want this to be a journey for the consumer," Nussey said.

According to Concha y Toro, it is the first time the company has launched a Travel Retail range with age statements.

The Casillero del Diablo Route of Cabernet Sauvignon was rolled out exclusively in Changi airport in April and will launch globally in Travel Retail from this month. In Changi, the three expressions are priced at SGD35 (US$20), SGD55 and SGD85. Each expression is from a different wine region in Chile - Maule, Rapel and Maipo.

Philip Sancto, regional commercial director for Asia Pacific at Concha y Toro, said: "Sales of Casillero del Diablo have almost doubled in the last three years in Asia's domestic markets. South American wines have huge demand in this region, but are dramatically underrepresented in the Travel Retail channel."
