Roseisle Distillery.

Fourteen gleaming new copper stills made a stunning spectacle in Morayshire this week as they were installed in their new home at Roseisle Distillery.

During the past few weeks the pot stills have been shipped 170 miles north in several consignments from Alloa to Roseisle, where leading drinks company, Diageo, is investing £40 million to build Scotland’s first major new distillery for 30 years.

The construction of the distillery, part of a £100 million investment in Scotland by Diageo, is on schedule with the first spirit due to run through the stills in early 2009.

Each of the stills – weighing 5-6 tonnes and scaling four metres diameter and eight metres high – took skilled coopersmiths at Diageo’s Abercrombies workshop around four months to craft.

They were transported in sections before being assembled on site at Roseisle. A team of coppersmiths travelled north to ensure the stills were safely installed in their new home.

Copper is a highly malleable metal and crafting the stills is very much an art with the most time-consuming part of their creation being sculpturing their “shoulders” which must be hammered into shape by hand.

“Traditional coppersmith skills have a huge influence on the spirit which is produced,” said Brian Higgs, Diageo’s Malt Distilling Director.

“An immense amount of work has gone into crafting the stills and preparing for their arrival and having them installed is a real landmark for the project. For both the team from Alloa and our team there is a huge sense of pride to see them going into place,” Mr Higgs added.

Diageo has 27 malt distilleries, as far afield as Lagavulin in Islay and Glenkinchie near Edinburgh, and the team behind the Roseisle project has included many design features which are examples of best practice being used at other distilleries.

The Roseisle stillhouse has been carefully designed to enable easy maintenance of the stills. The layout allowed space for a crane to be located in the stillhouse allowing the stills to be hoisted from the lorry transporting them directly into their resting places — minimising handling and risk of damage.

The new distillery will create 25 new jobs and feature pioneering green technology, allowing it to source most of its energy from renewable energy. The distillery will, however, continue to feature the traditional production processes which have been at the heart of malt whisky distilling for centuries.

Κυριοι,μολις ξεφυλλιζω το whisky magazine και με υψηλο αισθημα υπερηφανιας και συγκινησης διαβαζω για την εναρξη πληρους παραγωγικης διαδικασιας απο το αποστακτηριο Chichibu (α ρε mallios ) ,τη σπουδη του περιοδικου να συναντησει τον Ichiro Akuto και να συζητησει μαζι του (επισημαινοντας οτι οι πρωτες εμφιαλωσεις εγιναν αναρπαστες -παρανομες στην Σκωτια,μην ξεχναμε) ,το ταξιδι στην Ιαπωνια με τιτλο που τα λεει ολα (Nearing perfection) και την τετρασελιδη αφιερωση (!!) σε new releases και τιμες απο japanese whiskies...

μήπως να κοιτάγαμε πιο ζεστά το θέμα ελληνικό αποστακτήριο whisky;

Δεν κρατήθηκα, εδώ έπρεπε να απαντήσω.

Μια 6ατία πριν, βρισκόμουν στο Aberdeen της σκωτίας ως κλασικός φοιτητής.

Και ως φοιτητής δεν είχα στον ήλιο μοίρα όσον αφορά τα λεφτά. Το liddle της περιοχής ήταν ο σωτήρας μου.

Παρτυ στην εστία που λετε το βράδυ οπότε βγήκαμε να ψωνίσουμε τα παραδοσιακά μας αλκοόλια κατα το απογευμα. Μπαίνουμε στο liddle και όπως πάντα αρπαζουμε αρκετές βότκες και πέφτει το μάτι μας σε ενα πολύ φτηνό "ουίσκυ". Το τσιμπάμε και αυτό και φεύγουμε...

Το βράδυ, όπως άνοιγε ένας φίλος το μπουκάλι τον βλέπω απλώς να λύνεται στα γέλια και να μου πασάρει το μπουκάλι δείχνοντας την ετικέτα:

"Το προϊόν παρασκευάστηκε στην δράμα και εμφιαλώθηκε στην Θεσσαλονίκη απο..."

Πριν μερικές μέρες βρέθηκα με ένα anCnoc στο χέρι (Aberdeenshire) στο σπίτι μου στην θεσσαλονίκη...

έπρεπε να είχες κρατήσει ένα τέτοιο μπουκάλι, (δεν ήξερα οτι έχει lidl και στη Σκωτία!). Πάντως τα ουίσκυ του Lidl που εχω δει εδω στην Ελλάδα, είναι Σκωτσέζικης παραγωγής αλλά εμφιαλώνονται σε άλλες χώρες.

Anyway, εσύ βρήκες το σωστό δρόμο και μπράβο, καλως όρισες και στο φόρουμ.

First batch of Whiskey made in Cornwall in 300 years

Cornwall has joined the ranks of modern whiskey-making regions like Scotland and Ireland, with the first batch of the fiery spirit made in the area for 300 years.

At £150 for a half-litre (50cl) bottle, the limited-edition Hicks & Healey Cornish Single Malt seven-year-old Whiskey is perhaps beyond the reach of the average high street drinker but has been rated by expert Jim Murray, author of the best-selling Whisky Bible, as ''among the best debut bottlings of the last decade''.

The 61.3 per cent alcohol brew, which has gone on sale, is produced jointly by the St Austell Brewery and Healey's Cyder Farm - better known for Cornish Rattler cider.

David Healey, the founder of the cyder farm, said: ''It's taken 300 years to craft Cornwall's first premium whiskey, and seven years to age it - and it's well worth the wait.''

The liquor was inspired by St Austell's head brewer, Roger Ryman, who as well as coming up with beers for the brewery, has a ''passion'' for whiskey cultivated while working in Scotland.

The brewery created the mash of Maris Otter barley grown in Trerulefoot in South East Cornwall and local springwater at its Victorian brew-house, before it was transferred to Healey's farm near Truro, where they already make cider brandy, and passed through a double distillation in a traditional Scottish-made copper pot still.

At just 1,200 litres, they say it is the smallest legal still in the country and ''ensures longer interaction between the spirit and the copper''.

The best of the liquor was then collected and poured into American bourbon charred casks, where it has laid for the last seven years, creating ''a unique whiskey of exceptional quality''.

James Staughton, the brewery's managing director and great-great grandson of its founder, Walter Hicks, who lends his name to the whiskey, added: ''Fine quality spirits have always gone hand-in-hand with good ale and pubs so I was very excited when our head brewer Roger and David Healey came up with the plan to create our own unique Cornish whiskey.''

Mr Murray described the spirit as having ''notes of spice, honey and barley combined with delicate fruits and hints of cocoa and caramel before a late vanilla finish'' which make it ''faultless and almost beautiful beyond words''.

The first bottle, signed by the producers, will be auctioned on eBay in a wooden presentation box in aid of Cornwall Community Foundation, which raises money for community charities and schemes in the county, and the St Austell Brewery Charitable Trust.

The auction finishes at 4.30pm on Monday September 26.

Cornwall is the latest area where new spirit ventures have started.

In 2004, the Prince of Wales launched the Penderyn single malt whisky, distilled by the Welsh Whisky Company near Hirwaun, south Wales.

And in 2008, former Tyrrells crisp company owner Will Chase began production of Chase Vodka at his farm in Herefordshire, using potatoes too small to be made into crisps.

Mπορεί να μην είναι και τόσο "νέο" αποστακτήριο (ιδρύθηκε το 2004), το βρίσκω όμως εξαιρετικά ενδιαφέρον και ομολογώ οτι θα ήθελα να δοκιμάσω ένα dram από δαύτο, μόλις βγήκε το batch#4

Ευχάριστα νέα μια μικρή παρατήρηση σχετικά με το όνομα

νομίζω θα ήταν καλύτερα να διάλεγαν το ευκολότερο Glenbeg όνομα

παρα με το Ardnamurchan το οποιο θα είναι δύσκολο για πολλούς

Aπό την Ιρλανδία και πάλι το νέο, αυτη τη φορά όμως από το υποδουλωμένο Βόρειο τμήμα της και την ιστορική πόλη του Derry (που επονομάστηκε από τους Άγγλους....Londonderry).

Υπάρχει στα σκαριά ένα νέο αποστακτήριο εκεί και άν γίνει πραγματικότητα θα μιλάμε για το μοναδικό ανεξάρτητο του νησιού, αφού το Cooley ως γνωστόν πουλήθηκε στην Beam.
