Green light for Glenbeg boutique distillery plan

Published on 18 April 2012

David Ross

A NEW boutique distillery in one of Scotland's most remote areas has been given the go-ahead.

Highland councillors yesterday unanimously gave the green light to the facility on the Ardnamurchan Peninsula, although the company behind it – Adelphi Distillery Ltd – said it could be five years before the first "quality" drams are available to drink.

The distillery, at Glenbeg, is projected to create 10 jobs and will produce 100,000 litres of single malt a year, a modest amount compared to the millions coming from more established sites.

Keith Falconer, Adelphi Distillery chairman, said: "I gather it is going to take us 13 to 15 months to get the stills and everything delivered. But we would like to start construction as soon as possible to take advantage of the drier conditions in the summer, so at least we can get the buildings up before the winter rains."

He said it would probably be five years before they would be in a position to sell a whisky "of quality" and eight years before it gets "really good".

The council had received 105 letters of support and 52 from objectors to the application amid some concern over the planned location.

Opposition to the plan was led by Michael and Karen Macgregor, who own six luxury self-catering properties nearby. He said they were not against a distillery but that there was a site 500 metres away which would be acceptable to all.

Although Highland Council's planning officials had recommended approval, the four local Lochaber councillors on the planning committee successfully moved for a decision to be deferred until there was a site visit. It took place yesterday and afterwards the councillors unanimously approved the plan.

Wood chippings from timber on the Ardnamurchan Estate will provide the power for the plant, while the solid waste from the fermentation will in turn feed the estate's cattle.

UK: Isle of Harris Distillers to launch in 2014

21 December 2012 | By: Andy Morton

The first whisky distillery on the Outer Hebridean island of Harris plans to start production in 2014 with the “super premium” Hearach single malt.

Hearach will be the launch product for Isle of Harris Distillers, which aims to produce between 200,000 and 300,000 bottles a year, the company's MD Simon Erlanger told just-drinks today (21 December). The US and Japan will be the initial target overseas markets for the company, once the whisky has matured.

Erlanger will invest GBP10m (US$16.2m) from private equity in the company, including a visitors centre at its Tarbet site.

“These things take a long time to get off the ground, but it is gathering momentum”, said Erlanger, who before the Harris project helped relaunch the Ardbeg distillery for Glenmorangie.

More private-equity money needs to be sourced, Erlanger said, but he hopes to start producing the first bottles by the end of 2014.

“It's a little premature considering we won't be selling anything until 2018 at the earliest, but what I would imagine happening is that we would start with the more mature whisky markets,” he said.

“What's quite exciting though is that by the time we get to market that there will be developed markets that are now only emerging.”

Isle of Harris will employ 20 people on the island, representing about 5% of Harris' workforce. All operations except barley production will take place in Harris, however, Erlanger said he is testing barley growing on the island.

To market the distillery, Erlanger said he will work closely with the Harris Tweed authorities.

Earlier this year, Remy Cointreau paid $90m for Isley Scotch maker Bruichladdich.

UK: Wemyss Malts owner plans GBP3m distillery

9 January 2013 | By: Andy Morton

The Wemyss family, owner of Wemyss Malts, is to sink GBP3m (US$4.8m) into a new distillery in Scotland, with production set to start next summer.

The Kingsbarns distillery, Fife, is expected to have a 150,000-litre capacity and employ about ten people, a spokesperson for Wemyss told just-drinks today (9 January). Wemyss also confirmed it has taken full control of the company behind the new venture, The Kingsbarns Company of Distillers, whose founder Doug Clements has been planning the site since 2009.

The investment includes GBP670,000 from a Scottish Government Food Processing Marketing and Cooperation grant, one of the first to be issued to a drinks company since a rule change in March. The grant will go towards building costs, with construction expected to start in April, the spokesperson said, adding that it played a factor in the deal.

“It's a sizeable amount of money and it's great to have to Scottish Government's backing on this initiative,” she said.

Clement, who stays on as a director, said Wemyss was interested before the grant, but “things accelerated” after he secured it.

The distillery hopes to tap into Fife's large golf tourism market and will include a visitors centre. It will also showcase Wemyss Malts brands before Kingsbarns own produce is ready to sell in about 2018, with Wemyss Malts to handle sales and marketing. Kingsbarn's single malt will bear the qualities of a lowland whisky and should be "light and delicate", the spokesperson said.

Kingsbarns will be one of Fife's few distilleries.

In September, Diageo received council approval for a GBP150m extended warehouse facility in the region, to complement the group's increase in capacity at its Cameronbridge and Leven distilleries.

UK: Pernod Ricard targets 2015 for new Scotch distillery

19 February 2013 | By: Olly Wehring

Pernod Ricard has confirmed that it intends to open a new Scotch whisky distillery in 2015.

The company, which last year announced plans to invest GBP40m (US$62.2m) per year in its Chivas Brothers premium Scotch and gin division, said late last year that it was looking to construct a new malt whisky distillery in Scotland. Pernod selected the site of its silent Imperial Distillery on Speyside for the facility.

In London today (19 February), the communications director at Chivas Brothers, Vanessa Wright, said that the unit is “looking towards 2015 for completion”.

“We're going through the planning process at the moment,” she said.

Wright was unable to detail when production will begin or what the capacity will be. “We're looking at all the different options for the site,” she said. “It will be a significant capacity.”

As emerging markets continue to soak up Scotch, Pernod increased capacity at its existing distilleries in Scotland last year by 25%, Wright noted.

The Imperial Distillery, which has been inactive since 1998 and was acquired by Chivas Brothers in 2005, is located on the banks of the River Spey near Carron.
